Naked Measures

Openings' fourth annual exhibition -- features a diverse group of 20 artists who explore the elusive mystery of spirit, body, and soul through a variety of visual media, including photography, painting, drawing, mixed media, and sculpture.

"Naked Measures artists are compiling an incredibly unique and complex mosaic of artwork that aims to dispel the notion of the spiritual as separate from the ordinary, and the mindset that the 'holy' is a separate and rarefied realm only accessible to the worthy," explains Father Frank Sabatté, CSP, the director of Openings.

The Music + Art Project was born out of a collaboration between artists of the two art forms who were curious to see the relationship between chamber music and visual art. Artists are commissioned to create works using the music as an inspirational springboard. The musicians will view the artworks allowing these new interpretations to inspire them in a live performance.

220 Atelier- La Poesie du Paysage Art Exhibition

February 23 - March 28, 2010

220 Atelier is please to present La Poesie du Paysage, a two-person exhibition featuring the paintings and drawings of Robert Aitchison (New York), and Sybille Mathiaud (Paris).

Aitchison and Mathiaud both explore nature and landscape in their vibrantly colored works. Aitchison’s recent paintings verge on the edge of chaos, reflecting the jungles of Bolivia where he traveled in 2008. Mathiaud’s works, colorful and dynamic, explore her travels in the U.S. to such places as the Grand Canyon and Zion Park.

This is the inaugural opening event at 220 Atelier which aims to provide a space where artists can collaborate towards engaging exhibitions.

There will be an opening reception for La Poesie du Paysage on Tuesday, February 23^rd, 2010 from 6:00 – 8:30 pm. Both artists will be present. This event is free and open to the public.

The Openings Art Space is pleased to present A Collection of Spirit: Drawings by Marcus Spearman.

Marcus Spearman is a self-taught artist born in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York.

This exhibition brings together a collection of Spearman’s drawings spanning several years. These engaging works, executed in colored pencil, watercolor, and oil pastel, exude a vivid directness as they address themes of recovery and redemption.

Robert Aitchison, curator of the exhibition, was introduced to Spearman’s art while working together at the Institute for Community Living (ICL) Empower Clubhouse in the East New York section of Brooklyn.

This will be Spearman’s first solo exhibition in New York City. He has previously exhibited his artwork in group shows at the ICL Empower Clubhouse in Brooklyn, and at The Gallery at HAI, in Manhattan.

There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, December 17, 2009, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Hours: Monday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Perhaps the ‘ugly’ God doesn’t like are my attachments: the desperate clinging to things and ideas I’m convinced will satisfy me or provide me with certainty, security, or validity.

Often, that which I consider certain, essential, valuable, or stable is actually temporal- constantly changing, and dynamic.

Hey God… any suggestions on how to confront this ugliness??

In my art I explore notions of chaos and order.These collage/decollage constructions are made from drawings I created in 2000-2001. They were influenced by my interest in torn advertising posters on subway platforms and dilapidated walls of city buildings.

In this exhibition, Ilyan Ivanov and Robert Aitchison work collaboratively, exchanging and reinterpreting each other’s visions as they create new paintings that are as much about process as they are about conversation. As each artist revisits “finished” paintings, Aitchison’s examination of nature’s ephemeral architecture is synthesized with Ivanov’s interest in nontraditional mediums and surfaces. Ivanov’s background in music, science, and philosophy is further explored in his solo works, where he continues to experiment with mixed media and memory.
